The reason for the extra torque is because the basic oil pan is designed out of a thicker metal than an aluminum oil pan and can withstand a tighter oil drain plug. More experienced wrenchers can torque stuff by feel and you can usually make assumptions of torque specs based on conditions. Most vehicles are equipped with a basic oil pan and the basic oil drain bolt will require a little bit more torque.

If it is too difficult to remove the drain plug make sure you are not tightening the drain plug.
